মনের খোরাক মেটাই Satisfying Mind

Ever since the New York Yankees have won the "World Series", the media has been glorifying the efforts of the guys who have accomplished a great task of winning a series after 9 years. Alex Rodriguez, Derek Jeter, Hideki Matsui are like the heroes or champions who have been revered by so many people around New York, tristate area and the whole country of the US.

Yes, the men have done it again for the 27th time to win a "World Series". I have no problem in their winning the series, beating Philadelphia's Phillies. But, when they say they have won the "World Series", in my mind, I ask the question that 'did they really beat other nations in the world to win the "World Series" or is it just some states of the US fighting for the title'? Truly speaking, they did not. They did not beat or even face any other nation's teams in baseball to win this title. Did they? Then, my question is, 'why would it be called a "World Series"'? Is it because the US is considering itself as the "world" and disregarding other nations as outside of this "world"? Or something else?

I have asked several of my buddies who are huge Yankees fans this question. They could not properly state any valid reason as to why the title of this is called "World Series". Instead their general statement was that since it has been called "World Series" for years, it's been kept like that. But then again, why call it the "World Series" at the first place when it was introduced.

My conclusion is then, just call it a "National Series" instead of "World Series". If you don't play with other nations in the world, then why bother giving it a false title? Are you trying to segregate the rest of the world by creating separation between the US as "world" and the rest "non-world"?

Nevertheless, in that sense, I might give the name "World Cup Cricket" or "World Cup Football" as "universal". Would that be wrong?

I was thinking about writing this entry yesterday, but couldn't manage the time to do so. Nevertheless, it would be really wrong if I did not write about this at all. So, let's give this time for a remarkable experience of me at the bus yesterday.

As usual, I was coming home after long day of work and college. I got on the bus. Just after I sat down, I noticed that the bus driver was saying something on the microphone. He was saying something before as well, but I didn't pay attention while I was swiping my Metrocard. As the bus was passing by St. John's University, the driver was telling the passengers that we are passing by St. John's University which was established in 1870 (which I myself don't usually remember as a student). Then he went on to say some little history of the university. He also added that the university's basketball, baseball and football are one of the top in the college division. As he was telling all this, I was totally astonished that how much this bus driver knows about the university that I myself don't know as a student.

Then, as he passed by Hillside Avenue, Homelawn Street, he went on to say why the names came about for these streets, avenues etc. The passengers all seemed quite surprised as I guess, he had been telling them history of the roads, what passengers are passing by throughout the whole bus trip.

Even when we passed by local DMV office and Dept. of Labor office where there is a Work Force station to recruit unemployed people to work or provide job training, he went on to let passengers know that this is a great service that people can get if they are unemployed or if they know someone who is unemployed in this terrible recession time. He added that if we don't tell someone who is unemployed then, we are basically committing a crime of not letting someone know a valuable information. The way he remarked about this, he touched someone, that he went up to him asked to repeat the name of the office where exactly in the tall building their office is located. This really turned me on.

Later, someone asked him where did the bus driver graduated from since he is aware of many things that an average person is totally ignorant of. He remarked that he has a degree in "bustology" (meaning the study of bus operations). He also said that people don't know how to the greet the bus driver when they get on the bus, or they don't show respect to the bus driver by calling him/her "bus operator" instead of "bus driver" which degrades their values because they, in fact, operate the bus by telling what's the next stop will be or such (as far I can see not many does that nowadays, but some like him do) rather than just plainly driving the bus.

At the end, when people were getting off, one passenger thanked him by saying that she had a great entertaining afternoon because of him. Not any passenger got off from the back door of the bus, avoiding to thank him. At the last stop where I got off, every passenger said something to him, either thanking him or wishing him "Happy Halloween" or something like that.

It was totally a ironic experience to me as I usually see tension between passengers and bus operators as a regular bus passenger. Even more interesting was that this man held the microphone all the time to speak to the passengers while he was driving the bus to keep entertaining and letting passengers know a lot about their city and such. I don't know if he does the same when he drives in the morning rush hours, but I must admit that this was one of the experience that I know that not an everyday person would experience on a daily basis. And that man was surely "one in a million bus operator"!

Well, it's now another achievement that the current president of the United States, Barack Obama has won. This time it's from the Nobel Committee which is considered to be one of the highest, elegant and prestige organization in the world that recognizes individual or a group's efforts in the globe in various fields, ranging from literature, science to peace. The Nobel Committee has announced that this year, 2009, the Peace Prize will be awarded to Barack Obama. This is all over the news. Let me come to my point of view about this.

From the campaign that Obama ran to achieve the presidency from George W. Bush has marked a new era in world politics, if not at least in US politics. The enthusiasm that people showed towards politics in the US, especially among the newly-turned voters of young ages, is a milestone that this country has not seen for years. Generally, when young people listen to politicians, they simply ignore the talks and turn to music or something else. It's been a general notion to ignore politics among the US young adults. That has really changed from the start of the campaign to the election of the first African-American president of the US. What has caused this change? Many would argue that the inspirational words by Obama was a major factor in his winning the presidency over Hillary Clinton or John McCain.

After the election, it all came down to action. If a person just talks about change and then does nothing to change, then there's no point in choosing that candidate. Obama initialized his change from former Bush policy to wrap up the prison camp in Guantanamo Bay to start bringing troops back from Iraq. Even though situation in Afghanistan is deteriorating since he took office, the solution to that problem is yet to be discussed and determined. We may not like the current unemployment rate in the US due to the fragile economy's ups-and-downs. But we are sure about this that the initiative that the president has taken to create jobs, (or green jobs, perhaps) is slowly coming into light. It is not like the economy of the US will be back on track just after Obama took office as he applies some magic spells or something to soothe the crisis. If it were, then he would be Christ or a savior. As a human, he is trying to cause the change that he promised during his campaign. But it is about the common people who are actually responsible for bringing that change. If it's a one man's job, then what are all the citizens for?

In addition, when he tried to legislate the health care reform bill, he is being criticized and teased by critics, especially from the Republican party, for socializing the country. If my Congressman can get the benefit of free health insurance and get the best available care that can be given, isn't it also fair to ask that why can't I get the same benefit as well. After all, they are actually supposed to be representing the constituents who are common people like me. Don't people hold more power in democracy? Or is this country not in the path of democracy but brags about bringing democracy to other non-democratic nations? Whatever the case may be, it can be said that the critics of Obama don't want people to benefit from all the available care but wants their share of the pie.

Now, talking in terms of the world point of view, Obama has said during various speeches and conferences that he would like to strengthen the relationship that US has with all the Muslim nations, unlike George W. Bush. He even opened his door to diplomatic talks with Iran. In regards to Iran's nuclear proliferation, he is not taking the necessary steps on his own, but rather discussing the matter with Gordon Brown or such world leaders around the globe. He even sat down with Russian president recently to calm the tension that existed between the Sovient Union and the US for decades during the Cold War. In regards to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, he is trying to bring the two leaders from these conflicting regions into talks to end the battle and come to a lasting peace.

Although many of these actions are just in the beginning steps, it is not like that he is giving up on the obstacles faced when solving these crisis. It would definitely take time to soothe the scar that was left by his predecessor. But if we just conclude from his actions of nine or ten months that he is not deserving to win such a prestigious prize, we are actually hindering in the progress of actual peace that he is trying to achieve. From his words after hearing the news of Peace Prize, "humble" and "a call of action" demonstrates that he himself thinks he might not be suited to earn the prize yet, but the decision by the Nobel Committee puts him into more pressure to carry out his words into actions. It may very likely be that he might not be completely successful when he tried to deliver his words into actions, but the effort shown by this president is something extraordinary and no one can dare to argue that.

Since the news came out, I have seen in Twitter, Facebook and other news media that people are just hating the fact that Obama has won the Nobel prize. In some instances, it is the very same people who have casted their vote for him just less than a year ago. This is the situation not only at home, but also overseas. Foreigners who have supported Obama during his rise as president from all over the world to bring change to the ways things were going for the past few months or years, just can't take this Nobel prize victory of Obama by any means. Some are even saying that if Obama can win it, why can't they? To those, my question is, if you think you are eligible for winning Nobel prize, then why didn't you take the burden of a fragile economy, two wars overseas, broken healthcare system from Bush?

Finally, I just want to conclude by saying that those who are haters will hate someone that they can't stand for whatever reason it may be. But when the light of change will eventually illuminate, it will brighten them as well. Then, they might still be haters or lovers but it may be late. I'm saying this from the long legacy of popular presidents being assassinated in the US that it may not be very surprising to find out Obama being shot or bombed by some of his haters one day. Then, the achievements may be completed but the person may not be available anymore. So, even though the time may not seem right for some people who supports Obama, I say that let the man earn what he will eventually earn. Maybe this will prove to be one more encouraging factor to his list of accomplishments.

It's been quite a long time since I wrote something in my blog. But what I have experienced or seen today is something to record on this blog so that others can know about incidents like this.

Well, it was just another regular day of college, work etc. for me but when I was heading home in the bus, that's where the incident took place. The bus that I usually take comes from a distant place taking mostly high school students (most probably Francis Lewis High School) in that time after school dismissal. I usually finish around the same time from my college classes and work.

So, I was heading back home on the bus. As soon as I got on it, I realized that it's pretty much full with 95% high school students. What was interesting is that after looking around the bus from front to the rear, I noticed that only a handful (maybe 4-5 people who were non-high school students or average adult New Yorkers, including me). There were just so many of these students that their own conversational voice volume was almost like a high-volume stereo. When I looked at the corner, there was a black lady who seemed somewhat disturbed by this high volume of students screaming, yelling, shouting, talking, or just horsing around in the bus.

Then, at a point, a few girls of them saw someone they knew outside the bus in the street. They wanted to get off the bus right away. Since it was nowhere near the bus stop, the bus driver did not let them get off. They were standing almost on the stairs of the bus to get off, but the driver did not open the door, in accordance to the rules. This really infuriated few of the teenage girls. They were like "Oh Son of a..." in front of the public in the bus. They were shouting, screaming at the bus driver as if they are like some superior beings and the driver is like their servant who ought to follow their order as they say. The situation was quite dramatic at that point.

Then, when he let off the girls get out at the next bus stop, one of them got out while the other was obstructed by one of her male friend which caused the driver to think she would not get off and closed the door. This enraged that teenager even more. She would scream at the bus driver "You f**king a**hole. Stop the bus!" The driver did not care at this point since he was getting impatient by the happenings of these high school students. He even took the microphone used to call out the next bus stop, and told to the girl(s), "You better watch your mouth. We are seeing who's the real a**hole here". This was really crucial since I first saw a bus driver cursing at a passenger as the situation deteriorated.

Then, when he finally let them off at the next stop, they were cursing and getting off the bus. Now, the situation was calm. All the rest of the passengers were relaxed as well as the driver himself.

Then, what is it that caused this incident? Is it some sort of random incident that took place on an average day? Or is it the happenings of the US among the kids, children, teenagers all across the country? Do they not learn morals, respect, behavior from their parents, guardians or the school? Or was it that the school system in the US is fueling in this irrational attitudes of young people in this nation? I certainly don't like to aim at certain racial group but the majority of these teenagers were of African-American descendants, even though there were some whites as well. Is it this way that Obama thinks he can lead this country's future generation into a better stage for the upcoming years? Is it this way that the politicians hope to improve this great nation of democracy?

আর সেই বালক বড় হয়ে তার লক্ষ্যে পৌঁছাতে পারে। সে আর কেউ না, মাইক্রোসফটের ভুল বার্তা লেখক(error message writer)।

জিম্বাবুয়ের প্রেসিডেন্ট রবার্ট মুগাবে একবার ইংল্যান্ডের রাণী এলিজাবেথের কাছ থেকে নিমন্ত্রণ পান ইংল্যান্ড ভ্রমণের। সেই ভ্রমণের সময় একদিন মি. মুগাবে জিজ্ঞেস করলেন রাণীকে তার রাজকীয় জীবনের সাফল্য সম্পর্কে। রাণী জানালেন তিনি তার নিয়োগপ্রাপ্ত লোকজনদের খুব বিশ্বাস করেন এবং তিনি নিশ্চিত তার সকল কর্মচারীই বুদ্ধিমান। তিনি তার কথা প্রমাণ করতে প্রধানমন্ত্রী গর্ডন ব্রাউনকে ফোন করলেন।

রাণী মি. মুগাবেকে উদ্দেশ্য করে বললেন, "এবার দেখুন কি করে আমি আমার দেশের প্রধানমন্ত্রীর বুদ্ধিমত্তার পরিচয় পরীক্ষা করি।"

রাণী: "হ্যাঁ, মি. ব্রাউন, আমার আপনার কাছে একটা প্রশ্ন ছিল। আপনার মায়ের এক সন্তান আছে এবং আপনার বাবার একজন সন্তান আছে। কিন্তু এই সন্তান আপনার ভাই বা বোন কেউই নন। কে সে?"

ব্রাউন: "আর কে! আমি!"

রাণী: "ঠিক। ধন্যবাদ আপনাকে আপনার সময়ের জন্য।"

রাণী এবারে মি. মুগাবেকে বলছেন, "আপনি বুঝলেন তো?"

মি. মুগাবে বোঝার ভান করে চলে এলেন নিজ দেশে।

মি. মুগাবে প্রশ্নটি মাথায় নিয়ে দেশে এসে ভাবলেন তিনি তার অর্থমন্ত্রীকে এই প্রশ্নটি করবেন। এই ভেবে তিনি এক পার্টিতে অর্থমন্ত্রীকে সাইডে এনে একই প্রশ্ন জিজ্ঞেস করলেন।

কিন্তু অর্থমন্ত্রী তো একেবারে থ! অর্থমন্ত্রী মি. মুগাবের কাছে দু'দিন সময় চেয়ে নিল এই প্রশ্নের উত্তর খোঁজার জন্য। দু'দিন সময়ের মধ্যে সে তার যত বন্ধু-বান্ধব, আত্মীয়-স্বজন সবাইকে জিজ্ঞেস করল প্রশ্নটি। কেউই এর উত্তর বলতে পারছিল না। এমতাবস্থায় অর্থমন্ত্রী সিদ্ধান্ত নিল তিনি প্রতিবেশী দেশ দক্ষিণ আফ্রিকার অর্থমন্ত্রীর কাছে প্রশ্নটি করে এর উত্তর নিয়ে নিজ দেশের প্রেসিডেন্টের সামনে হাজির হবেন।

এই ভেবে তিনি দক্ষিণ আফ্রিকার অর্থমন্ত্রীর কাছ থেকে প্রশ্নটি করলেন ফোনে। উত্তরে দক্ষিণ আফ্রিকার অর্থমন্ত্রী তাকে জবাব দিল, "আরে বোকা জিম্বাবুয়েয়ান, এ তো সহজ কথা। এর উত্তর আমি!"

উত্তর পেয়ে সঙ্গে সঙ্গে জিম্বাবুয়ের অর্থমন্ত্রী ছুটে এলেন মি. মুগাবের অফিসে। এসে তাকে প্রশ্নের জবাবে বললেন, "স্যার, আমি প্রশ্নটির উত্তর সংগ্রহ করেছি। এর উত্তর হবে মি. গর্ধান (দক্ষিণ আফ্রিকার অর্থমন্ত্রী)।"

এই শুনে মি. মুগাবে তো হাসিতে গড়াগড়ি খায়। উনি বললেন, "আরে মূর্খ, তোমার উত্তর ভুল। যাও তুমি আমার অফিস থেকে বের হও।"

অর্থমন্ত্রী উত্তরে বললেন, "কিন্তু স্যার, তাহলে সঠিক উত্তর কি? কে তাহলে সেই সন্তান?"

মি. মুগাবে এবারে বললেন, "উত্তর হচ্ছে গর্ডন ব্রাউন। বুঝলে?"

এক বাঙালী ও এক আমেরিকান পাশাপাশি বসে উড়োজাহাজে করে নিউ ইয়র্ক থেকে লস এ্যাঞ্জেলসে যাচ্ছে। আমেরিকানটি বাঙালীকে উদ্দেশ্য করে অফার করল একটি মজার গেম খেলার জন্য। আমেরিকানটি অবিরত বলতেই লাগছে। যদিও বাঙালীটি ঘুমাতে চাচ্ছিল তবুও আমেরিকানটির ঘ্যানর-ঘ্যানর দেখে মনযোগ দিল শেষ পর্যন্ত আমেরিকানটির গেমের দিকে।

আমেরিকান বলছে, "ঠিক আছে। আমি আপনাকে একটা প্রশ্ন করব ও আপনি যদি উত্তর দিতে না পারেন, তাহলে আপনি আমাকে $৫ দিবেন এবং ভাইস ভার্সা।"

এবারে বাঙালী মুখ ঘুরিয়ে নিল। অফার মনে হলো যেন পছন্দ হয়নি। আর সাথে সাথে আবার ঘুমিয়ে গেল। কিন্তু আমেরিকানটি নাছোরবান্দা। উনি খেলবেনই। আর তাই এবারে অফারটি পরিবর্তন করে বলল, "আচ্ছা, তাহলে তুমি যদি উত্তর না জানো, তুমি আমাকে $৫ দিবে আর আমি যদি না জানি, তবে আমি তোমাকে $৫০০ দিব।"

এবারে বাঙালীর মনোযোগ এলো যেন। বোঝালো সে রাজি। তো খেলা শুরু হলো।

আমেরিকান প্রশ্ন করল বাঙালীকে, "বলুন তো, চাঁদ থেকে পৃথিবীর দূরত্ব কতটুকু?"

কোনো উত্তর না দিয়ে বাঙালী পকেট থেকে $৫ বের করে আমেরিকানের হাতে তুলে দিল।

আমেরিকান জিততে পেরে বাঙালীকে বলল, "তো এবারে আপনার সুযোগ।"

বাঙালী প্রশ্ন করল, "পাহাড়ে উঠে তিন পায়ে কিন্তু নামে চার পায়ে, বলুন তো কি এমন জিনিস?"

আমেরিকান চিন্তা করতে লাগল। বুঝতে পারছে না কি উত্তর দিবে। ল্যাপটপ বের করে মোডেম যুক্ত করে ইন্টারনেটে গেল। বিভিন্ন রেফারেন্সের সাইট, লাইব্রেরী অফ কংগ্রেস খুঁজতে শুরু করল। এমনকি তার কিছু বন্ধু-বান্ধবকে ইমেইলও করল প্রশ্নটি নিয়ে। কিন্তু কিছুতেই কোনো উত্তর পাচ্ছে না। অবশেষে ক্লান্ত হয়ে পরাজয় স্বীকার করে পকেট থেকে $৫০০ বের করে বাঙালীকে দিয়ে দিল। কিন্তু তার জানার পিপাসা গেল না।

বাঙালীকে উদ্দেশ্য করে বলল, "তাহলে উত্তরটা কি ছিল?"

কোনো শব্দ উচ্চারণ না করে বাঙালী পকেট থেকে বের করে $৫ দিয়ে আবার ঘুমিয়ে গেল।

এক বাড়িতে এক বুড়ো মহিলা থাকত। একদিন হঠাৎ কলিং বেল বাজল। দরজা খোলা মাত্রই এক ভদ্রলোক শোষকল হাতে দাঁড়িয়ে দেখা গেল।

"সুপ্রভাত। আমি কি আপনার কিছুটা সময় নিতে পারি? আমার এই সর্বাধুনিক প্রযুক্তির শোষকলটি আপনার সামনে প্রদর্শন করে দেখাব।" লোকটি বলল।

বুড়ো মহিলা বলল, "আরে বের হন। আমার কাছে পয়সা নেই এখন।" এই বলে মহিলা যখন দরজা বন্ধ করতে যাবে তখন লোকটি দরজা আটকে দিয়ে বলল, "আরে দাঁড়ান, ম্যাডাম। আগে তো আমাকে আমার ডেমোটুকু দেখাবার সুযোগ দেবেন।" এই বলে লোকটি তার সাথের এক বস্তা থেকে একগাদা গোবর বের করে কার্পেটে ঢেলে ফেলল।

এ করার সাথে সাথে লোকটি বলল, "আমার এই শোষকল যদি আপনার কার্পেটের এই গোবর পুরোপুরি চুষে নিতে না পারে তাহলে ম্যাডাম আমি নিজেই বাকিটুকু খেয়ে ফেলব।"

বুড়ো মহিলা একটু বিরক্তির স্বরে বলল, "তা আপনার ভালো মতো ক্ষুধা কিন্তু থাকা লাগবে, কারণ সকাল থেকে আমার ইলেক্ট্রিসিটি কাজ করছে না। তাহলে নেন শুরু করুন..."

সম্প্রতি কিছু ঘটনা ঘটেছে নিউইয়র্ক সহ বিভিন্ন স্থাণে যা আমার মনকে খুব নাড়া দিয়েছে। এ নিয়ে লিখব লিখব করে আর লেখা হচ্ছিল না। বিষয়টি আসলে আমাদের বাঙালীদের কিছু জিনিস নিয়ে।

মূল কথায় আসি...

প্রবাসে (নিউইয়র্ক) গত ৬-৭ বছর ধরে যে আছি, এর মাঝে নানা অভিজ্ঞতা হয়েছে। বাঙালী/বাংলাদেশীরা প্রবাসে থাকলেও দেশীয় আচার-আচরণ, সংস্কৃতি, ধর্মীয় অনুষ্ঠানাদি সকলই যথাযথভাবে পালনের যতটা সম্ভব চেষ্টা করে। আমি বয়সে ছোট হিসেবে কোনো গ্রুপ বা গোষ্ঠীতে যতটা সম্ভব চেষ্টা করি না জড়িত হবার। যদিও এদের উদ্দেশ্য লোকহিতকর, তবুও কোনো নির্দিষ্ট দলে যোগ দিতে চাই না এই কারণেই যাতে অন্য দল বা লোকেরা মন খারাপ না করে বা দূরে ঠেলে না দেয়। সবার সঙ্গে যতটা সম্ভব ভালো সম্পর্ক রাখারই চেষ্টা করি। এইসব দল বা গ্রুপ বিভিন্ন অঞ্চল (যেমন, ঢাকা, চট্টগ্রাম, রংপুর, কুমিল্লা ইত্যাদি), ধর্মীয়, অথবা সাংস্কৃতিক ভিত্তিতে গড়ে ওঠে।

মূলত যে কারণে এই লেখাটি লিখছি তা আসলে কিছুদিন আগে নিউইয়র্কে ঘটে যাওয়া কিছু আঞ্চলিক সমিতির কিছু ঘটনাকে কেন্দ্র করে। প্রথমদিকে এইসব সমিতি ভালো মতো চললেও পরের বছরগুলোতে এদের মধ্যে মতানৈক্য দেখা দেয়। মূলত সমিতির বা দলের নির্বাচনকে কেন্দ্র করেই এ ধরনের অনৈক্যের সূচনা হয়।

এর মধ্যে সেদিন স্থাণীয় এক পত্রিকায় পড়লাম এখানকার জালালাবাদবাসী এসোসিয়েশনের (এটি আমেরিকায় সবচেয়ে বড় আঞ্চলিক সংগঠন) এই বছরের কমিটি গঠনের নির্বাচনে নানা রকমের অপ্রীতিকর ঘটনা ঘটে। নির্বাচনের ফলাফল নিয়ে মতানৈক্যের এক পর্যায়ে দু'পক্ষের মধ্যে হাতাহাতি, মারামারি সংঘটিত হয়। পরে পুলিশ এসে একজনকে নাকি ধরেও নিয়ে গেছে বলে শুনেছি। হতাহতও হয়েছে কিছু লোক। এইসব হতাহতের মধ্যে নতুন প্রজন্মের কিছু কিশোর-কিশোরীও নাকি আছে। আবার সেই রিপোর্টে আরও পড়েছি যে, এবারের জালালাবাদবাসী এসোসিয়েশনের নির্বাচনে নাকি অর্ধ মিলিয়ন ডলার পর্যন্ত খরচ করা হয়েছে।

এত কিছুর পরে আবার গত সপ্তাহের অথবা এর আগের সপ্তাহের (ঠিক মনে করতে পারছি না) পত্রিকায় দেখলাম চট্টগ্রাম এসোসিয়েশনের সাধারণ সভাকে কেন্দ্র করে মারামারি, হানাহানি হয়ে গেছে। ছবিতে দেখিয়েছে পুলিশ এসে আহত অবস্থায় একজনের পাশে বসে।

এইসব খবর পড়ে বা দেখে শুধু প্রশ্নই আসল মনে। এই কি বাঙালীর পরিচয়? প্রবাসে এসেছে সন্তানদের মানুষ করতে, নিজেদের ভাগ্যোন্নয়ন করতে, দেশের সম্মান বাড়াতে। আর এইসব হাঙ্গামা কি দেশের সম্মান খুব বৃদ্ধি করবে? একটু মর্যাদা (সংগঠনের প্রেসিডেন্ট হলে) পাবার জন্য এত কিছু করা কি আমাদের রূপ বিশ্বে অন্যান্য দেশের লোকদের কাছে কি খুবই বাড়ায়? স্থাণীয় সরকার কি দেখছে না বাঙালী/বাংলাদেশীদের কি রকম আচরণ? এমনিতেই বাংলাদেশের গত কয়েক বছরের রেকর্ডে (দুর্নীতিতে টানা ৫ বছর চ্যাম্পিয়ন) বিদেশীরা একটু নিচু দৃষ্টিতে দেখে বাংলাদেশীদের, তার ওপর আবার এমন কর্মকান্ড...হায় রে কপাল!

উপরন্তু, আমার মাথায় ঢুকল না যে বাংলাদেশীরা তাদের সন্তানদের দেশীয় আচার-সংস্কৃতিতে মানুষ করতে চেষ্টা করে সুদূর প্রবাসে, তারা কি করে ছোট ছোট ছেলে-মেয়েদের সামনে এমন হীন কাজ করতে পারে? বেশীরভাগ বাচ্চারাই এদেশে জন্ম। তাই তারা ঠিকমতও জানেও না তাদের পিতৃগত বা মাতৃগতভাবে সংস্কৃতি সম্পর্কে। আর এই যদি দেখে তাদের বাবা-মা করছে তাদের সামনে, তাহলে এই প্রজন্ম কি শিখবে?

শুধু এটুকুই নয়, আমি যদিও বেশী বুঝি না টাকা-পয়সার হিসাব তবুও একটি সংগঠনের নির্বাচনের ব্যয় যদি জানতে পারি অর্ধ মিলিয়ন ডলার তাহলে তো মাথাই ঘোরপাক খেতে থাকে। ঠিকমত একটা বাসা নিয়ে থাকতে পারি না, অথচ এরা এত ডলার খরচ করে নির্বাচনে(!) এর চেয়ে যদি দেশের দুস্থ-হতদরিদ্র লোকদের এক বেলার খাবারেরও ব্যবস্থা করতেন এইসব লোকগুলো তাহলে না জানি কতগুলো প্রাণ বেঁচে যেত। একেই বলে কপাল! যার নাই, তার কিছুই নাই! আর যার আছে, তার নির্বাচনে ব্যয় করার জন্য ভুরি ভুরি ডলার আছে!

আবার পাঠকের নিকট শেষ প্রশ্ন, এই কি বাঙালী? এই কি মোদের পরিচয়? এই কি আমাদের স্বভাব?

ফারুক বড় হয়েছে এক ছোট শহরে। তারপর পড়াশোনার জন্য বাইরে গিয়ে আইনজীবি হয়ে ফিরে আসে। তার স্বপ্ন ছিল ছোট শহরে সে বড় লাটসাহেবের মতো দিন কাটাতে পারবে। সে নিজ শহরেই একটি ল' অফিস খুলল কিন্তু প্রথমদিকে কর্মকান্ড খুব কম ছিল। ক্লায়েন্ট আসত না বললেই চলে।

একদিন সে দেখল এক লোক তার অফিসের সামনে দিয়ে যাচ্ছে। সেই লোকটার কাছে নিজেকে ইমপ্রেস করতে সে একটা বুদ্ধি আঁটল। যখন লোকটা দরজার সামনে ফারুক তখন তাকে ইশারা দিয়ে ভেতরে আসতে বলল আর ফোনটা হাতে তুলে নিল। ফোনে বলতে লাগল, "...না, না। একদম না। ঢাকার ওই সাহেবদের বলবেন আমি এই কেইস এক কোটি টাকার কমে করব না। হ্যাঁ, হ্যাঁ, আপিল কোর্ট কেইসটি শুনানীর জন্য সামনের সপ্তাহে তারিখ দিবে। আমি প্রাথমিক যুক্তিসমূহ তুলে ধরব আর আমাদের টিমের অন্যান্যরা আমাকে অন্যান্যভাবে সাহায্য করবে। ঠিক আছে? আর হ্যাঁ, DA-কে বলবেন আমি এ নিয়ে শীঘ্রই আলোচনা করব।"

এভাবে গেল প্রায় পাঁচ-দশ মিনিট। এই পুরো সময় ফারুক শুধু বলেই গেল আর লোকটা চুপচাপ বসে রইল।

অবশেষে, ফারুক ফোন রেখে লোকটিকে বলল, "দেরী হবার জন্য দুঃখিত। কিন্তু আপনি তো দেখতেই পারছেন আমি কতটা ব্যস্ত। তা বলুন আপনার জন্য আমি কি করতে পারি?" লোকটা উত্তরে বলল, "আমি ফোন কোম্পানী থেকে এসেছি। আমাকে বলা হয়েছে আপনার ফোনখানা হুক-আপ করে ঠিক করে দেবার জন্য।"
